Bakasyon sa Bohol 2014 (Manila-Cebu-Bohol transfer)

Last June 2013, PAL Express announced a ticket fare promo at 115.00 pesos as base fare rate. I booked a flight for my mom and aunt going to Surigao and cost me around 1300.oo pesos for a round trip from Manila per person. On the same day, me and my office mates were able to find a flight to Cebu since there were no more flights available to Tagbilaran for the same base rate. The total cost for each round trip ticket is around 1495.00 pesos.

Few days later, after looking for resorts in Panglao Island in Bohol, we decided to book Dumaluan Beach Resort.  I posted a more detailed information about the resort including others at this link.

Since we need to travel by sea from Cebu to Bohol, we requested Kathy Cubero (wife of Tatsky the tour guide in Bohol) to buy us a ticket from Ocean Jet that cost 820.00 pesos each one week before our travel date. Kids 3 years and below are free of charge. She was able to buy us the ticket few hours after we sent her our payment via bank deposit. The e-tickets were sent via email.

All other services such as van transfers from Tagbilaran port to Dumaluan, country side tour and sea tour were all managed by Kathy. You can email her and reserve your travel date without any payment. All payments will be settled after the tour. Contact numbers and email address will be provided at the bottom of this blog.

On January 5, 2014, we arrived at NAIA terminal 2 around 3:00 AM and smoothly checked-in our baggage. Each passenger was allowed to check-in maximum of 20 kilos. For hand carry I believe you are allowed to bring up to 7 kilos. I was able to bring in water in feeding bottles, milk powder, 6 tetra packs of juices and biscuits in the plane for my kids. All other liquids were in the luggage.

30 minutes before the flight time, we were requested to board. The flight was not delayed. We left Manila on time and arrived in Cebu on time. Same happened with our flight back to Manila from Cebu.

Snacks particularly Rebisco biscuit and peanuts were provided in the plane plus water of no charge.

Around 6:30AM, we already took a yellow cab from Mactan airport going to Pier 4 in Cebu that cost us around 60 pesos. We waited at the Ocean Jet terminal for almost 2 hrs since the ferry schedule we took was around 9:20AM. There was a cafeteria at the terminal that serves breakfast meal that cost from 100 to 110 which I find a bit pricey for a breakfast meal.

Ocean Jet terminal has a lounge area where you can sit and relax while waiting. There was also a play area for kids to play.

2014105080102

Ocean Jet has available life vest for each adult and kids underneath the chair. Though the kids have their own life vest worn already. I bought it in Alabang Town center for around 1500 each.

It took us almost 2 hours to arrive in Tagbilaran port. Tatsky (Kathy’s husband) was waiting for us outside the port.

Since all of us were starving, Tatsky brought us to a nearby eatery from the port.

A mother-daugther day out

Update: We tried their whole body massage for one hour at 350.00 per head and so far one of the best massage I ever had.

—————-

It was an ordinary Saturday when i got a message inviting me to join mini meet-up of moms whom I met from one of moms group (n@wies).

I was having lunch then and the meet-up was scheduled at 3pm of the same day at Spa Story in Salawag Dasmarinas Cavite. I said yes right away  kasi spa means time to treat myself and relax.

I came along with my daugther. When I arrived at the place I was so amazed with their interior. It is so modern but cozy. They even have a place for kids to bring their toys and art materials. They also let the kids borrow their coloring book and color pencils.

I availed their foot spa with pedicure at 370. 165 for basic manicure with nail color. Basic pedicure is at 200. They will soak, clean, shape and put on nail polish for the basic manicure and pedicure.

The kids availed nail color using Zoya brand of nail polish at 50 pesos. Additional 25 pesos for each nail if you avail their nail art service.

They also offer body massage, hand spa and hair spa.

Choco Chips CupCake with Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting

This is the first time I make choco chips cupcake with chocolate cream cheese frosting and I got it the right way. My friends even ordered some cupcakes after they tasted it.

1526337_10201733209304221_915544275_n1493238_10201733208144192_1207067804_n

Here are the ingredients.

For cupcake:

1 cup and 1/3 cup of unsalted butter ( I prefer unsalted than salted though if you use salted butter dont add salt anymore)
I use Queensland unsalted butter that cost around 70 to 78 pesos. It is cheaper than Magnolia and Anchor.

1 and 2/3 cup sugar ( You can use any white refined sugar or caster sugar). I use bonus brand from SM

2 cups and 2 tbsp. all purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt (if you use unsalted salt)

2 tsp vanilla

1/4 cup milk ( I use anchor powdered milk)

1/4 cup chocolate chips

Procedure

1. Pre-heat the oven at 350 degrees F. Make sure to use oven thermometer for accurate oven temperature.

2. Sift flour, baking powder and salt all together.

3. Pace the butter and sugar in an electric mixer.

4. Add vanilla and egg one at a time.

5. Add the flour mixture to the vanilla and egg mixture. Do not overmix.

6. Add the choco chips.

7. Bake it for 30 mins. or when you press a toothpick inside the cupcake, the toothpick comes clean when removing.

For chocolate cream cheese frosting:

This recipe is taken from http://www.cupcakeproject.com/2008/04/my-favorite-chocolate-cream-cheese-frosting-recipe-the-cocoa-powder-makes-a-difference.html#DSE8rUEYmseZ3sG4.99

  • 8 ounces cream cheese , room temperature ( I use Philadephia Cream Cheese)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3 cups sifted powdered sugar (You can decrease this amount if you don’t care about it being as stiff for piping)
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Mix cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
  2. Mix in powdered sugar, one cup at a time.
  3. Mix in cocoa powder.

It is better to give than to receive.

Giving something to less privileged people really make difference. What is sacrificing your one day tall coffee from Starbucks or your one day snack comparing to the one school year of education a child can get when those one tall sized coffee for each person joined together.  Wouldn’t be so nice to know that your 100 pesos or your 50 pesos can do a lot? Or that one piece of pencil you donated can make one child learn how to write or count?

These kids, that we help now, may be one of the heroes of tomorrow. They will be one of those people who our children might be meeting in the future. They can be our children’s boss or colleagues. They can be the one who will help our children later.  That is why since last year I started to make difference.. I supported a group who have their own life and family to mind with but didn’t care to give their few time to spend collecting school supplies all over the country, delivering it to the barangay they supported, climbing mountains of Mindoro just to bring these school supplies the kids.

Last year (2012), someone from a member of Toughmoms FB group posted about Lapis@Papel project asking donation of school supplies. All school supplies were delivered by the member of the said project to Kilapnit Elementary School in Mindoro. I was able to get donations from friends and office mates (cash and school supplies).

10-18-2013 12-51-16 PM

This year, they will be helping Panaytayan Elementary School in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. Currently I was able to get lots of school supplies and cash compare to last year from toughmoms member and friends.  I am about to schedule a meet-up with them next week to give all the school supplies I have with me right now. I am so glad that some moms extended their help asking their friends and relatives to donate also.

The items from cash donations is not yet included in this picture.

Kid’s Birthday, The Party Details!

Last August 25, we celebrated the kid’s birthday. My eldest kid (son)is now 4 while my youngest kid (daughter) is 2. The date when we held the party was the exact birth date of my daughter.  I started planning the details since late 2012 by inquiring the rates of some suppliers such as the party host, caterer, venue. I also did looked for kiddie party inspirations/ photos from the internet. The original theme was supposedly Strawberry Shortcake and Thomas the Train since the celebrants is a girl (my daughter) and 2 boys (my son and nephew). It was a little bit difficult to decide what party theme must be used to match a boy and a girl party.. Finally, I decided to use colors (blue and pink) as their main theme and Minnie Mouse (since my daughter knows Minnie Mouse over Strawberry Shortcake) and Thomas the Train ( for the boys) will only appear on clothes, cake, and loot bags.

Majority of the party preparation were my DIYs. Most of my effort went there. Starting from buying prizes, loot bag contents as giveaways to the kids guest, balloon decorations, arts and crafts. I have to start buying these things around June 2013 and started doing those DIY crafts in Mid July.  Here are the list of my DIYs.

1) The Loot Bags. The blue ones with Thomas the Train that was printed in the sticker paper with guest name is for the boys while the Minnie Mouse designed paper bag was for the girls. The paper bag was made of cartolina bought from local bookstore. The price range of the cartolina is between 5 pesos to 6 pesos since I bought it from 2 different bookstore. The black cartolina was at 11 to 13 pesos since I cannot find cheaper one. Sticker paper is at 37 pesos for high gloss paper. Ribbons were all bought from Divisoria ( shops along Tabora). Ribbon price is around 40-100 pesos for the whole roll (50 yards).

The white polka dots was made of cut circle from bond paper, paste it in a pink colored paper. I used double-sided tape since it is more adhesive than using glue on stick.

The contents were face towel at 11 pesos each, toys like puzzle, mini skateboard, xylophone and mini blocks from younger kids, activity book from Divisoria, clips and head bands for the girls, and some food stuff like choco mallows, jellies, gummies, cheese rings and others.

2) The ceiling decor and Balloon Pillar. The balloons were bought from Kyla Mae at their Bacoor, Cavite branch. Near SM mall. Since the venue is an outdoor, I bought Cherubin brand with size 12 inches at 600 for 100 pcs. Smaller balloons (5 inches and 260Q long balloons) with BND brand were all bought from Lollipop Balloons in SM Bacoor. The price was at around 2-3.25 pesos.

The paper pompoms on the other hand is 17 pesos each. I was able to make (with my sisters’ help) 24 pcs of that.

64442_10200899042410570_47193582_n

3) The backdrop. I bought ribbons (light blue and fushia pink) from Divisoria. Hanged it in parallel with each other
using nylon string. The Names of the celebrant were made of styro foam, cut in letter shape and cartolina to write the names.  Paper
pompoms that were not used in the ceiling were all placed below the hanged ribbon.

4) The Kiddie Salon.  All hair accessories were bought in Tabora (Divisoria) including the 2 round mirrors. Nail polish, lip gloss, cologne spray, nail sticker for nail art were all from Watsons and Afficionado (for the cologne). I bought soft tulle in Tabora also at 15 pesos per yard for the curtain and table cover.Hullahop use to hang the tulle was bought at 75 pesos each. I forgot to tie together the 2 hullahops
for it to stay hold and balance.

Two friends of mine man the salon for the entire duration of the party. Thanks for that!

5) The Sweet Bar.  All Jars and containers are bought from Daiso and SM. Some of the glass wares were pre-owned.

A white cartolina was used to cover the window part of the venue so that I can hang the baderitas “SWEETS” and paste the paper rossette at the wall without ruining the wall paint using glue stick.  Cookie pops and marshmallow choco dip with sprinkles were all made by me. Cookie pops was made of chocolate biscuits (HI-RO) dipped in melted chocolate and sprinkled with candy sprinkles and wrapped it in a clear plastic that can be bought from baking supplies shop.

Popcorn were from Kettle Korn. Their biggest pack is at 95 pesos mostly cheese flavor. They have other flavors such as sweet corn and BBQ on smaller packs at 50 pesos. Choco Mallows and Nips were from Comfoods at Buendia-Pasong Tamo in Makati City. There are also comfoods products being sold at the bus terminals in Alabang and Taft Ave in Manila at higher cost. Meringue were from Nataniel’s (Molito Alabang btanch), Gummies (the shark and strawberry dream) were from GummieHaven at 400 per kilo.  Pretzels, waffle stick, Potchi, Jelly candies were all from SM supermarket.

6) Table Centerpiece. It was made of paper pompoms in painted clay pot. The balloon stick was cemented inside the pot to make it stand and stable. Then balloon on top.

Aside from my DIYs. I booked Limphots as my photographer at 2900 for photo service only. Photos are in jpeg formats. What I love most is on how he took pictures of the kids. Over-all I am satisfied in his work.

The kids’ attire (boys) was bought from 168 in Divisoria at 200 pesos each. I also saw Thomas the train t shirt in the mall of the same price but unfortunately they dont have bigger size for my 4 year old son. My little girl’s dress (Minni Mouse themed dress) was made by Ching’s dress maker. Their shop is located in Alabang near Starmall. Just pass the PNR railway after Lynas Mall. The labor cost was 800 and I spent around 400 for 3 yards of geena silk, satin, tulle, organza and 1 yard of light pink polka dot cloth. The labor cost was originally priced at 1200 pesos but I asked the dress maker if she could do it from her home and lower the cost for me. Good thing she agreed. 994898_10200796439525562_1736379250_n

For the caterer, I got Symor’s Catering from Salitran Dasmarinas Cavite at 220 per head ( 3 main dishes, 1 vegetable, 1 dessert, rice, pasta and drinks). For kids, they served spaghetti with small meatballs, BBQ, mini-burger, chocolate fondue and 1 tetra pack of juice at 100 per kid. I was disappointed with their set-up though I expected it to be plain but the dark blue table linen that was used was not part of our agreement. It was supposed to be light pink and light blue lace. I’m not sure what happened. I was not able to confront them about it since I was too busy checking other things in the party.

They also didn’t serve the drinks per table. Though I was not able to ask also about it to Zarina. The water also can’t be serve since they have to use the same glass for ice tea. Thus, either a guest will approach them, ask for a glass of water and then go back to ask again for either water or another glass of ice tea. I think they must improve this for their future clients since I was informed that they already increase their rates at 275, the cheapest rates they offer. Adding one set of glass for water is really a must. It is my first time to encounter a caterer that has no separate glass for water and another glass for juice or softdrinks. This makes me decide not to get them again on my next event. The food though was delicious. Pictures of their setup below.

To add more sweets in the party, I ordered Nestle ice cream from Nestle. A total of 160 pcs of ube and keso flavored sorbetes on stick, kimy and jelly stick ice cream was delivered in icebox. The person who delivered the ice cream is also the person who will assists the guests in picking which flavor they would want.

To make the entire program alive, I hired Len Peralta to host the party. Her package includes program hosting, balloon twisting, ventriloquism (puppet), and magic with love dove. It cost me 4500 for it and additional 2500 for out of town fee and 2000 for the sound system. Her ventroloquism is quite short. I expected it to be longer but the kids enjoyed it. I found her magic OK. She was able to entertain the kids which is very important to me. Some adult guests also seems to enjoy her performance. I also did enjoyed her long and big sword coming out the paper bag hahaha.. and the Yuck thing when she asked the kids if they want to kiss the puppet, someone shouted yuck! hahaha.. I will definitely will hire her again. My 4500 was worth it. Oh by the way, Len increased her rate earlier this year to 5000 for Metro Manila events only. Out of town fee applies.

I ordered mini red velvet cupcakes from Dyann, smart parenting member. The mini cupcakes cost 16.00 pesos. The cakes on the other hand was from Thearts. They have a baking supplier shop along Aguinaldo Highway in Bacoor Cavite. Just after Jollibee Niog. The Minni Mouse cake cost 1200 for 13×9 inches and the Thomas the Train cake cost 700 for 8 inches round cake. The cake was not too sweet and delicous.

Over-all, I was too tired. With so many DIYs to set up. With the help of my 3 neighbors, 2 sister, my husband, my sister boyfriend, we were able to finish setting up the decorations at 2pm. We started by 8am 😦

Lesson learned? Maybe next time hire a decorator? 😀 and make a task list for each people who will helped. That was the one I forgot to do. But we all enjoyed the party and all of our effort pays.

Planning Cebu/Bohol Trip

Fortunately, we (with other office mates) were able to book a SALE flight to Cebu few weeks ago at PAL Express. Each person costs around P1,567 pesos for a round trip travel Manila-Cebu-Manila. Travel dates must be between September 2013 to January 15, 2014 and we were able to book the date for January 2014.

After such, we started looking for nice but cheap accommodations and tour from the internet. Reading reviews from Tripadvisor and Virtual Tourist can help you decide which among the resorts in bohol can provide best service, best experience or w cheaper price.

Of all resorts, we decided to reserve at Dumaluan Beach Resort 2 despite of other negative feedback. Lowering our expectation will help us appreaciate the resort and the beach more. According to the reviews, Dumaluan beach is better than Alona beach. Though I cannot say so since we havent been there yet. But since it is a private beach, comparing to Alona the sand is more well maintained and you dont have to see lots of boats (bangka) park along the shore. I just hope it will be like that as expected.

We reserved 3 rooms of Superior Deluxed that cost 2150 for 2 person and the room can accommodate up to 4 person according to the resort staff. You only need to pay 400 for each extra person with mattress. Each person have free buffet breakfast including your added extra person.
The buffet breakfast, according to the reviews I’ve read, has a limited food choices but good enough to start your day.

This image was taken from the resort website. For other room rates please visit their website at http://www.dumaluanbeach.com/

This image was taken from the resort website. For other room rates please visit their website at http://www.dumaluanbeach.com/

Beside the resort is Bohol Beach club which you can also visit with certain entrance fee  The fee is already includes lunch or dinner buffet by the sea and free use of their pool. Dinner buffet is expensive that lunch buffet.

There is also a BBQ retaurant at Dumaluan Beach Resort 1 that sells cheaper dinner which I find it nice since there are few restaurants
or store around. Going to Alona from Dumaluan takes around 30 mins as what the staff of the resort said and the only cheap transportation available is the Habal-habal which cost around 20-50 pesos. You will be lucky if someone from other part of Panglao took a tricycle going to Dumaluan. By then you can get the same tricycle to bring you to Alona or other parts of the island.

We also contacted Tatsky and Kathy (Tatsky’s wife) about the bohol country side tour and sea tour. Below are the rates.

You can refer to this website for schedules of ferries/boat going from Cebu to Tagbilaran or Tubigon. Getting Tubigon way , as what others said, will took you another 1 hr ride via land to Tagbilaran. The fare is lesser though.
Itinerary for 4 days and 3 nights will be posted soon including other resorts of along Alona beach.

A Visit to Avilon Zoo (Montalban Rizal)

My family visited Avilon Zoo in Montalban Rizal. I bought vouchers from metrodeal at 200 per person. Kids of 1 year old and above has to pay the same amount. On a regular rate, it will cost you 400 per adult and 300 for kids 1 year and above. Only babies 12 months and below are free of charge.

Avilon zoo is located at Montalban Rizal. I was able to find from other blog on how to go there by commuting. You can visit their website here.

From Cavite, we rode a van going to Save More in Edsa-Taft, then took MRT going to Araneta station. Beside Farmer’s there are vans/FX going to Montalban Rizal and just ask around which FX goes there and inform the driver to drop you off at Total Gas Station. Just keep reminding him after 30 minutes of travel without traffic. The fare cost is 50 pesos per person. From Total gas station, cross the street where orange tricycles park. Inform the driver to bring you to Avilon Zoo. Fare rate is 50 pesos per tricycle that can accommodate 3-4 persons.

Avilon Park is right beside Avilon zoo. So after a tiring morning in the zoo, you can enjoy swimming at their pool or stay for a night at Avilon park. I haven’t check their rates though.

Souvenir shop is also available inside the zoo that sell animal stuff toys. I also saw puppies being sold too.

The kids can feed some animals, take picture with an orangutan for a certain cost and see some farm animals like horse and sheep.

Kiddie Party’s Lootbag Contents and Prizes

Unplanned, I passed by SM Southmall just today and the other few weeks ago. There is a store named Toy Express at the basement area of the mall selling toys. It’s where all SM department store toys price are marked down up to 50% are being displayed and sold.

I was able to buy a few items for my kids’ upcoming birthday this August for loot bag contents and prizes for the games. A 10 peso yoyo, 15 pesos jigsaw puzzle in a box, 30 pesos mini skateboard that is being played using the hand, 100 pesos Koo Koo Club House, 60 pesos Ban Dai airplane and fashion doll at 150 from 300 pesos. I’ve also seen lots of toys marked down its price to 50% like Play skool, Disney water container, some stuff toys and a lot more..

Good finds eh! I also will be visiting Divisoria next month for more stuff.

Overnight Stay in Tagaytay (One Tagaytay)

It was my second time to dine at Sonya’s Garden last October 2012. I was with my husband and my son. It was supposedly a wedding anniversary date but I can’t leave my son at home while we are enjoying in Tagaytay. So I decided to bring him with us.

We left home around 8am and take a bus along Aguinaldo highway in Imus, Cavite. It took us around more than an hour to reach Buck Estate. We just informed the bus driver to drop us at the Buck Estate. From Rotonda you will pass Summit Ridge, Taal Vista, Mendez Crossing, SM Save More, Alfonso welcome arc at the right side, Coffee Beans, Splendido then Tagaytay Royale. Buck Estate is just right after Tagaytay Royale.  There’ a road going to the right (down) from the main highway. Tricycles are available for commuters at the main highway corner Buck Estate.

There is also a person who is calling tricycles parked from Main highway to Sonya’s so we didn’t have to ask the tricycle driver to fetch us after few hours of dinning.

After lunch, we immediately checked-in at One Tagaytay. We took a jeepney from Buck Estate back to Rontonda and rode a tricyle that cost around 60 pesos to One Tagaytay. I bought an overnight stay from Asia travel at 3500 (tax included) that cost 4100 if I booked directly from One Tagaytay. This comes with free breakfast buffet. Buffet is not always available according to the front desk clerk of the hotel. It depends on the number of guests for that day and it is during weekends only.

Our stay was great.

The first room we checked in was in room 521 which we found out that the air-con was not functioning. after one hr or so we were able to transferred at 421. The sad thing is instead of my husband join us right away at the pool, he has to wait for the person or advice from the front desk on where we will be transferred and takes an hr or so.. So he didn’t enjoy much the pool..

Though I was just disappointed on their pool. I checked some reviews before that their pool is heated but it was not. I have to go down the pool and go up immediately and sit and wait beside the pool for my body to adjust on the coldness of the weather and the pool. I have my kid with me and my kid don’t want to swim.. So after few minutes I was able to swim for 1 hr.. Your body will get used to it anyway. But I would still love if they will have it heated. The pool is small, good enough for 2-3 family with one kid or two else you will no longer enjoy its space. I’m glad we came there first, so we enjoyed the pool alone before the next 2-3 batches of family/partners arrived.

By 6pm, we went to AYUTHAYA Thai Spa and avail their Ventosa Massage that I bought from Metrodeal for 300+ each. We did enjoyed the massage. Me and my husband took turn on taking care of our son. The spa salon is right infornt of RSM Restaurant.

After that we dine at RSM restaurant. We ordered Nilagang Baka and Pork Sisig. The nilagang baka was quite salty. I didn’t enjoyed it much. The restaurant is cozy and they have a venue upstairs for weddings or birthdays.

It was though a nice weekend getaway and I am still planning to have another visit to Tagaytay.

Decorating Your Own Kiddie Party: How I started

Way back 2010, I was planning for my kid’s 1st birthday party and got a balloon decorator to make 100 pcs of balloonderitas for the ceiling, 1 pair of pillar, 1 cake arc and 2 pcs of Elmo and Cookie Monster standee (rent only) for 3500 pesos. I found out that if I will add another setup for table centerpiece it will cost me around 180-200 each. So I decided learn how to do it instead. I attended one of the  informal basic balloon decoration for a fee of 500 pesos which allows me to learn how to make a pillar, making a 6 petal flower using a long balloon, and some other basic steps in making a balloon decor.

Aside from that, I also searched photos from the internet for ideas and watch demo from YouTube. And of course, practice make makes it perfect.

Some of my balloon creations before the party.

This cost around 35 pesos for Elmo Mylar, 3+ pesos for 5 inches balloons, 1.50 for balloon stick and

a 6 pesos small pot and portion of plaster of paris for making a balloon weight

Volunteering to decorate also helped me enhance my skills in balloon decor making. These are some decorations I made for other moms.
